Flea Market rules

Flea Market is a set-collection, push-your-luck card game for 2 to 6 players: hunt for finds from stall to stall, pile objects up in the middle of the table, and pick the right moment to sweep them all up — without walking away with the cursed ones.

Overview

Flea markets are the ideal place to discover hidden treasures… but some may be cursed. Collect finds from stall to stall and try, or not, to get them all. Beware of cursed objects and make sure you are the one who makes the best deals.

Players place cards in the playing area one after the other. As soon as a player exceeds the element limit, they collect all played cards, give some of them to the other players, and keep the rest. At the end of the game, the cards you collected make you earn or lose points.

Components

  • 4 double-sided Round cards (odd numbers on the front, even numbers on the back). Each shows the round number, the element limit and the present number, with separate values for a 2-player game and for a 3–6 player game.
  • 6 Find tokens and 6 Colour tokens: visual markers to quickly count the elements on the table.
  • 90 Flea Market cards: 72 Find cards (6 colours × 6 items × 2 copies) and 18 special cards (+1/-1, Pass, Trash).
  • 8 Help cards.

Setup

  1. Place the 4 Round cards face up in a stack, in the order 1/3/5/7, with round 1 on top.
  2. Place the Find and Colour tokens beneath the Round cards: they mark the number of elements placed during the round.
  3. Shuffle the Flea Market cards to form the draw pile. Each player draws 5 cards. In a 4-player game, first remove 2 cards from the draw pile.
  4. The first player is the one who most recently bought something at a flea market.

How to play

  1. Play a card — starting with the first player and going clockwise, each player plays one card from their hand. Arrange each distinct item in a single row, and group matching colours into columns beneath each item. Then move the associated Find and Colour tokens from top to bottom. An item counts as one element, and a colour also counts as one element.
  2. Draw a card — after playing, draw: you should always have 5 cards in hand.
  3. Check the element limit — if the number of elements exceeds the limit on the Round card, the round immediately ends. The player who ended it gives 1 or 2 of the played cards to the other players, then takes all the remaining played cards and keeps them face up in front of them.
  4. Prepare the next round — discard the used +1/-1 cards, then show the next Round card: after odd-numbered rounds, flip the card; after even-numbered rounds, reveal a new one. The player to the left of the one who ended the round starts the next one.

Counting example — the play area holds 4 items (doll, vinyl, mirror, amulet) and 4 colours, for a total of 8 elements.

Presents — from round 1 to round 4, you give 1 card; from round 5 to round 8, you give 2. Those 2 cards can go to a single player or be split between two. Receiving players keep them face up in front of them.

The cards collected at the end of each round form your collection: keep them separate from the cards in your hand.

+1/-1 card

2 cards max per round

It changes the element limit of the current round. Place it to the right of the Round card so everyone can see the change.

Example — within a single round you can place 2 +1 cards, or 2 -1 cards, or 1 of each, but never more than 2 in total.

Pass card

It lets a player pass their turn. Discard it after playing it.

Trash card

It lets a player discard one of the cards already played. Discard the Trash card after playing it.

Identical card

You cannot play a card identical to one already placed in the playing area.

No playable card

If you cannot play any card from your hand, you end the round.

End of the game

There are 8 rounds in total. If the draw pile runs out before the last one, the current round becomes the final round. The game ends when the final round ends. If nobody ends the round after all players have played every card in hand, no presents are given.

Then discard the cards left in your hand. Take the cards you have earned, face up in front of you, and discard every duplicate — if you have 2 red Amulet cards, discard 1. Then count your points.

Vinyl — the player with the most different colours earns 10 points. In case of a tie, all tied players receive them.
Mirror — the player with the most different colours loses 10 points. In case of a tie, all tied players lose them.
Camera — 1 point per different colour.
Diary — minus 1 point per different colour.
Amulet — minus 2 points per different colour.
Doll — with 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 dolls of different colours: 0 / -1 / -3 / -6 / -10 / -15 points.

The player with the most points wins the game.

2-player game

The Round cards show a specific element limit for 2-player games. A 6-round game is also possible. And the player who ends a round never gives more than 1 card, whatever the round.
